The Position

We are creating the position of Design Office Manager to support our growth and establish a sustainable structure for our design process. This is a two-pronged role: designing our machines and building the engineering department that will drive our products into the future.

You will work closely with the company’s lead designer, who serves as the technical and product lead. After a brief introduction to our products (assembly and modification of prototypes), you’ll quickly become familiar with technical documentation and design support, and then gradually gain independence in machine design, all while establishing the methods, standards, and tools of a robust engineering department. Ultimately, you will lead and help the team grow.

This is a position for someone who wants autonomy, the chance to make an impact, and the desire to build—not just to carry out tasks.

Your Responsibilities

• Designing our custom machines and automated lines (cutting, machining, material handling, conveying) using Autodesk Inventor: mechanical design, selection of technical solutions, drives, and sensors.
• Produce technical documentation: general and detailed drawings, parts lists, instruction manuals, and assembly procedures; launch the products.
• Standardize and leverage: Create and maintain a library of components, design standards, and reusable methods to make the engineering department faster and more reliable.
• Improve products and make them more reliable: seek out the best technical solutions and incorporate feedback from the field and after-sales service into the design process.
• Organizing the design office: establishing the design office’s processes, tools, and work methods.
• Build and grow the design engineering team: recruit, mentor, and develop the skills of design engineering staff by teaching them design standards and methods.
• Work closely with production, purchasing, and sales administration to develop designs that balance quality, cost, and deadlines.

Desired Qualifications

• Engineering degree (5 years of post-secondary education) in mechanical engineering or design, or equivalent experience.
• Proven experience (ideally 5 years or more) in the design of custom machinery, automation systems, or industrial equipment.
• Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor (required): 3D CAD, drafting, bill of materials management.
• A solid foundation in mechanics, powertrain, transmission, and guidance systems; knowledge of automation and sensors is a plus.
• Ability to organize, standardize, and document an engineering department: attention to detail, independence, and a practical mindset.
• A desire to lead and help a team grow over time.
• Knowledge of exterior carpentry (aluminum, PVC) is a plus, not a requirement.
